PETs | Our Projects | CfBT Education Malaysia Project English Teachers Project English Teachers (PETs) operated in 20 well equipped, key rural or semi-rural, government residential secondary schools around the country, in both East and West Malaysia, for students who have excelled in their primary education. Although these students were highly motivated and academically capable, and most would go on to higher education and key jobs, particularly in the public sector, it had become increasingly apparent that they did not have the necessary skills in speaking and writing to operate effectively in English. This in turn puts a ceiling on their career possibilities. CfBT teachers of English were therefore seen as a much-needed resource to improve students' motivation and levels of accuracy and fluency in speaking and writing. Class sizes were relatively small (around 25 to 30). A large part of the role of the Project English Teacher was to work with the students communicatively both inside and outside the classroom through co-curricular activities. Inside the classrooms the teachers used group work and pair work activities to encourage the students to use the English language by involving them in task-based activities. Outside the classrooms they involved the students in different fun activities including drama, debating, environmental awareness clubs, and sports as well as different international pen pal projects with students in Bali, UK and Turkey. |
